Alliance for Pharmacy Sustainability

Helping turn our communities into ECO-mmunities

- with a pharmacy perspective in mind -

Alliance for Pharmacy Sustainability (APS) is an University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Pharmacy registered campus organization. Our ultimate mission is to improve quality of life for all through ensuring proper disposal and better sustainability practices for pharmacy-associated medical supplies and medications.

We will work towards our goal by searching for and delivering resources to pharmacies to help reduce their waste and to educate members of our communities on proper disposal options for pharmacy-related waste. We aim to foster relationships with pharmacies to help find better solutions to reduce their waste and increase the amount of waste recycled. Additionally, we are committed to actively engaging with our community via outreach to community pharmacies and other outpatient settings to help communities understand the how’s and why’s of safe and ecological pharmacy-related waste disposal.

We will adapt our understanding of the best environmental sustainability practices in the field of pharmacy and healthcare as they evolve, and incorporate these changes into our education and community outreach practices. We aim to ensure the field of pharmacy is actively engaged in reducing pharmacy-related waste while practicing more sustainable habits for our communities.

Our Current Work

We have two broad goals:

  1. Reduce waste in pharmacy/pharmaceuticals

  2. Educate people in our communities on proper disposal of medications and medical supplies

Pharmacy Stock Bottle Recycling

Pharmacy stock bottles (the containers that medications come in) are made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which are highly recyclable. We are finding ways to prevent stock bottles from going into the landfill.
